14 fret to the body soprano?
There has been a trend recently for mezzo soprano ukulele. These instruments were only recently conceived by that great modern builder Dave Means. Dreaduke, while not being a true mezzo soprano does allow you to get past the 'dusty' end if you so require it without the unbalanced look of a 'long neck'. My first comission for these came 10 years ago from the CEO of Korg instruments in Japan. He had visited Hawaii and seen one of my classic tenors hanging in the lobby of a hotel. It took him a year to track me down and he asked me to build a Kamaka/Maui Instruments style soprano. And so we have the Dreaduke... A couple of years and 16 Dreadukes later another Japanese client contacted me for a similar order - this time 24! It practically killed me making that many and at one point I had a dozen sitting nearly finished in the workshop gathering dust for 4 months: I just couldn't face another repetitive task. Well, I learned my lesson and kept the form and every now and then when I have some superb curly koa I make one of these. They have a throaty/earthy sound: not typically what you would expect from koa; more a mahogany overtone... usual finish is satincellulose. Starting price is £425or $850.
