All about wood sets...
Here is a brief glossary to help you understand my terminology and grading:
- Quartersawn: this refers to the way which the wood is converted from the log; if you look at the end grain it will be vertical.
- Rift sawn: this is where the end grain is not vertical and is greater than 45 degrees, to horizontal. This is sometimes refered to as flat sawn.
- Wood set: this refers to a complete set - back, front and sides.
- Rising match: we supply lots of one piece sets and aim to match the front to the back by slecting the next piece in the cutting sequence. All sides will be natched like this.
- Bookmatch: this is where you have two piece front and backs that are 'pairs' in the cutting sequence; when joined they create a 'mirrored' effect.
- Select: this wood has very little figure; it is good and plain and is ideal for your first build. This may not be fully quartesawn but it will be natched.
- Premium: this wood is quartersawn, has some figure, is a bit more difficult to hand bend than select and is great for those who have gained building confidence.
- Mastergrade: highly figured, rare, quartersawn wood for that special project.
